A few years ago, I met with a pretty severe road accident that had my jaw broken in two places and most of my teeth shattered. The reality was, I was on a scooter, driving at barely 25mph… and the vehicle in front of me suddenly braked, causing me to scrape its side and fall over. I was wearing a half-helmet that left my jaw exposed, and because I had the weight of a pretty hefty laptop bag on my back, I fell forward with quite a bit of force. A full-face helmet would have probably saved my jaw from impact, and saved me trips to the hospital and the dentist for the following eleven years.
Most bicycles and e-bikes don’t come with a full-face helmet enforcement. For vehicles that barely touch 30mph, the idea of having a severe accident seems low… but not entirely absent. You could be like me, just falling awkwardly, or like nearly 41,000 bicyclists who die globally because of other fast-moving vehicles on the road. Most bicycle helmets don’t come with a jaw-guard… and it’s something the folks at Paris-based THE BEAM are hoping to change, in collaboration with VIRGOMOVE for what is now their 9th Kickstarter.

Having gotten that morbid cautionary life tale out of the way, here’s a look at a sleek e-bike helmet that also prioritizes complete head safety. Meet VIRGO – it gives you the safety of a motorcycle helmet, in the lightweight, comfortable form factor of a bicycle helmet. Given that e-bikes, e-scooters, hoverboards, and other personal vehicles are all helping us commute faster, regular bicycle helmets just won’t cut it. Designed for the new age of new electrified commuting, the VIRGO is lightweight, durable, advanced, and offers all-round facial protection, especially with its jaw-bar that protects your lower face from any impact.
The VIRGO’s design is truly unique, combining the best parts of a bicycle helmet with an MTB helmet. It’s sleek, weighs a mere 600 grams (21 ounces), and is designed around the new European regulation NTA-8776, made for high speeds up to 45 km/h (28 mp/h) while also complying with regular bike regulations EN 1078/CPSC. It comes with a hard-shell polycarbonate outer layer, with an ABS inner shell and MIPS tech on the inside to keep your skull protected on impact. A jaw-bar protects your chin, snap-on visors let you protect your eyes in harsh sunlight, and a snap-on LED light module at the back lets people behind you notice you in the dark.
The VIRGO’s design borrows a lot from the high-end bicycle helmet. It encircles your head with an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell, underneath which sits a MIPS system that protects your head from rotational impact. The headgear comes with as many as 9 air-vents, increasing breathability while you ride, and an adjustable fit thanks to a rotatable knob that lets the helmet conform around your head.
However, it has a few standout features that set it apart from your conventional bike helmet, starting with that jaw bar, which is sleek, but provides just the right amount of impact protection to save your chin and lower jaw if you were to fall face-first, like me. The VIRGO helmet also comes with snap-on rotating visors that attach magnetically, letting you cut the glare in the daylight or just prevent any dust from getting into your eyes, and a snap-on taillight that sits on the back of your helmet. Powered by an accelerometer that can detect your movement, the LED taillight glows red when you’re slowing down, to let people behind you know to slow down too. In low-light conditions, the red glow helps other riders, drivers, and even passengers know that you’re in their vicinity, promoting awareness and preventing a collision.
Each VIRGO helmet comes in three sizes, fitting a variety of head shapes, and four colors to choose from. The helmets start at an affordable $99, or $129 if you opt for the inner MIPS system. You also get the detachable visor and taillight with your pledge, and your entire kit delivers globally, starting August 2023.
